Alexander Sternberg Consultant, Haematologist
Mr Alexander Sternberg trained in haematology at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He is part of a team which provides clinical and laboratory haematology services to hospitals across the Thames Valley Region. He runs NHS clinics in Oxford and Swindon.
Mr Sternberg also specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with haematological malignancy including myeloma, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukaemias. Along with conventional chemotherapy, he delivers autologous stem cell transplants. He also cares for patients with non-malignant blood disorders.
He investigates and manages patients with abnormal blood tests, particularly where there is unexplained anaemia, neutropenia (low white cells) or thrombocytopenia (low platelets). He participates in a number of national and international studies of new drugs for patients with myeloma, leukaemia, lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndromes. Mr Sternberg has a specific interest in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) that forms the basis for his research in Oxford. He is Chief Investigator of a National Cancer Research Network study that is looking at patients with MDS and leukaemia.
