RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Research Thesis

TITLE: EVALUATION OF RENAL PARENCHYMAL DAMAGE FOLLOWING NEPHROLITHOTOMY

My research project was based on the evaluation of renal parenchymal damage following nephrolithotomy, either open or percutaneous (PCNL). Renal function and morphology were assessed preoperatively and 1 week, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively using Scintigraphic studies. During the study I was responsible for patients preoperative preparation and either assisted at the assisted at the procedures or carried them under supervision of the senior staff. I was responsible for the postoperative care and data collection. The study clearly showed that PCNL does not cause lasting morphologic or functional changes in renal parenchyma even when several tracks are created when compared to open nephrolithotomy.
