General surgery is a specialty which mainly focuses on the abdomen but also involves problems related to the thyroid, breast and hernias. This includes diseases of the stomach, oesophagus, small and large bowel (colon & rectum), pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system.
This area of surgery is specifically related to diseases and conditions which affect the colon, rectum and anus. There is a wide spectrum of problems ranging from malignant tumours of the colon and rectum to inflammatory and functional bowel disease. This area also covers problems related to defaecation such as fistulae, haemorrhoids & disturbances of continence.
